Pat “PJ” Rice wins 5th Annual Sandjobs & Stroganoff Tournament in Sudden Death Speedwalk

Sisters, OR -

A tournament unlike any other, ended unlike any tournament, ever. After 72 hours of unique and spirited competition a new champion was crowned under the shadows of Black Butte in front of a band of 6 battle hardened competitors. The victory was as clear as a glass unicorn after a weekend of dominance on and off the golf course, putting Pat Rice in plaid for eternity. However, the story of the 5th annual SJ&S was anything but a speedwalk in the park and will go down in time as at least the 5th best tournament since 2012 and certainly the second best since 2015.

Thursday - 9/22/16 - Aspen Lakes GC

Pat Rice - 3

Chris Wilson - 2

Matt Wilhelmsen - 2

Luke Erickson - 2

Pat McKelvie - 1 1/2

Max Schuetze - 1

Miguel Palomares - 0

Nabil Zerizef - 0

Thursday saw the competitors start where last year’s tournament ended on the traditional Sunday course, Aspen Lakes. Fond memories were everywhere for past champion Wilhelmsen who had donned plaid just 2 years prior. Thursday offered two debuts, one for newcomer and early MVP candidate Patrick McKelvie as well as another for the tournament MVP, Pat Rice’s new set of golf clubs. Little did anyone know it would be a sweet 72 hours for those shiny new shafts. His golf clubs had a good few days as well.

Friday - 9/23/16 - Juniper Golf Course

Pat Rice - 5

Chris Wilson - 4

Matt Wilhelmsen - 4

Pat McKelvie - 3

Max Schuetze - 3

Luke Erickson - 2 1/2

Miguel Palomares - 1

Nabil Zerizef - ½

The return to Juniper, with Pat Rice’s traditional arrival 3 minutes prior to tee time offered new pairings, but similar results. Rice, Wilson, Wilhelmsen all picked up points on the course to keep them just in from of the pack. The group was joined by Palomares for the first time on the course with Zerizef, the defending champion arriving late in the day after a school speaking tour regarding his many lessons learned over the past year as a champion Sandjobber. Friday night festivities bled into Saturday morning setting up an epic battle on Dadurday.

Saturday - 9/24/16 - Crooked River Ranch

Pat Rice - 7

Matt Wilhelmsen - 7

Luke Erickson - 5 1/2

Chris Wilson - 5

Max Schuetze - 4

Patrick McKelvie - 3

Nabil Zerizef - 3

Miguel Palomares - 1 1/2

Rice and Wilhelmsen loaded up the U-Haul on moving day and let the Big Dog “eat” on Dadurday. Buoyed by packed lunches from Andy, everyone enjoyed a beautiful day along the curves of Crooked River Ranch. After a front 9 win by Chris, Andy and Bill, the pairings were switched up after 9 holes. As we all now, after 9 holes, everyone needs a break. What ensued while PJ, Lou and Cid played with Dick, was the lowest 9 hole score on record (it’s the only one) of -6 by Chris, Andy, Bill and Luke.

Sunday - 9/25/16 - Black Butte Rance - Big Meadow - Final Standings

Pat Rice - 10*

Chris Wilson - 10

Matt Wilhelmsen - 8 1/2

Luke Erickson - 6 1/2

Max Schuetze - 5 1/2

Nabil Zerizef - 5 1/2

Patrick McKelvey - 3

Miguel Palomares - 1 1/2

Sunday provided another charge from former champion Chris Wilson who almost won in 2015, but Pat Rice took the momentum back  with a clutch 25 foot putt on 17 to secure the tie with Wilson on 10 points from 4 days. The two proceeded to par both playoff holes leading the tournament into a non-golf finale for the ages. Wilson and Rice lined up for the first ever 100m speedwalk finale in any tournament history, ever. To only further the historic nature of the race, it came down to a photo finish with Pat Rice grasping the Golf Tour trophy first. He then proceeded to break it, so it was also the last time.

2016 was a truly memorable tournament, worthy of its 5 year anniversary and equal to the dreams of everyone for the 361 days since the 2015 tournament had wrapped up. The tournament committee would like to extend thank you to the many brave men and women who helped this year’s tournament be, quite possibly, the best in its young history.

The wives, wags, families and significant others of the Sandjobbers - The tournament wouldn’t be possible without your faith and belief in this worthy cause and competition.

Travis - our gracious host and donor of the unicorn vase. We can only hope his many cameras bring him comfort as there is absolutely nothing he can do about 6 guys getting in his hot tub together. God Bless.

The Sisters Bonfire Beowulf Gang - we’re sorry we missed you on Saturday night, hopefully the embers were glowing and the metaphors of Grendel kept you occupied all night long

Nessa and the grumpy KJ - Epic night with both of you, we can only hope we see you again for another rendition by Nabil (Tenacious Z) of ‘Fuck her Gently’, which was quite probably the most romantic moment in SJ&S history.

Dick and Parker - memorable guests within our foursomes, and also, thanks for playing golf with us!

Patrick McKelvie - Never has a star shone so brightly and then disappeared from the SJ&S universe. You were loved and then you were missed, and your logo’d gear was quite possibly the highlight off the course this year.

Nana - Best pot pie in the history of Stroganoff
